Landscape Photography Workshops in Torridon and Wester Ross

Sam offers bespoke landscape photography workshops and tuition throughout Torridon and Wester Ross. Whether you’re a new photographer looking to learn the basics of landscape photography, a keen enthusiast looking for tips on composition, or an experienced photographer looking for a local guide to show you the best locations for landscape photography in the Scottish highlands, contact us to find out more about my tailored 1-2-1 and small group workshops.

My half day workshops last 4 hours and can be arranged to coincide with either sunrise or sunset. I run workshops throughout Wester Ross and Ross-Shire, including Torridon, Loch Maree, Applecross, and the Coulin Forest. I will arrange to meet you at a location chosen specifically to make the best use of the weather conditions on the day, or alternatively I can meet you at a location of your choice.

  • Half day 1-2-1 workshop: £120

  • Half day small group workshop (2-4 people) - £70 per person

What to expect from my photography workshops:

Before your workshop I will contact you to discuss your current level of photography and determine what you would like to achieve from the workshop. We will then decide on a location based on the weather forecast for sunrise or sunset, or alternatively I can arrange to meet you at a preferred location of your choice.

Fitness

My workshops usually require a moderate degree of fitness and mobility but I can tailor the workshop to account for your own preference. You may be required to walk a short distance on rough terrain to reach some of the best photography locations in Torridon, however many locations can be accessed directly from the roadside.

Clothing

The weather in Northwest Scotland can be unpredictable! You will need to bring suitable clothing including warm layers, waterproofs and suitable footwear for hiking. If you are booking a workshop in the summer, I would also suggest a midge net and some insect repellent!

Food

Unfortunately, I am not able to provide food or drink on our half-day workshops. I suggest that you bring some water, snacks, and a flask with a hot drink if it is going to be cold.

Equipment

I assume that all workshop participants wish to bring their own photography equipment, however I do have some equipment that can be borrowed if needed. Please let me know of this in advance. I recommend that you bring at least the following:

  • Camera – ideally a DSLR or mirrorless digital camera

  • Lenses – If you can, both a wide angle and telephoto lens but don’t worry if you can only bring one lens. If you use Canon cameras with an EF mount, I do have some lenses I can lend to you.

  • Tripod

  • ND and Polariser filters (I have filters that you can use if needed)

Topics I can cover on workshops (depending on your needs):

I will discuss any specific topics you would like me to cover with you beforehand. Below are some examples of topics I can cover:

  • Camera settings for landscape photography

  • Image composition

  • Making the most of natural light

  • Location choice, planning and scouting

  • Using ND, graduated and polarising filters

  • Shooting in manual mode

  • Focussing and depth of field

  • Exposure bracketing and focus stacking

  • Long exposure photography

  • Developing your photographic style

  • Post-processing (see below)

Post-processing

If you have booked an in-person workshop, I can also offer an additional one-hour online post-processing tutorial for £30 following your workshop where we can review your images in Adobe Lightroom and/or Adobe Photoshop. I can provide advice on techniques such as the use of sliders and filters in lightroom, luminosity masks, and exposure blending and show you how to process your RAW files in a way that best presents them in a natural and realistic way.

Testimonials:

“I have absolutely nothing negative to say about our session. I thoroughly enjoyed it and came away motivated to get out there and do it rather than sitting on the couch watching YouTube, useful as that is. I felt you dealt very well, and patiently, with my queries and aims for the session. You gave a lot of useful pointers for what to look for in composition, scouting an area rather than jumping in at the first interesting location and trying different settings with the same composition amongst a lot of other things.

Prior to the session I was concerned that I would feel uncomfortable given the huge difference in our skill levels, this was never the case.

So, once again, thank you for a very enjoyable and informative morning.”

Colin Barnie

“Thank you so much for such a great morning on Sunday. I thoroughly enjoyed it and really benefitted from your expertise and guidance, plus of course your local knowledge”
